More than 200 persons with disabilities in Akwa Ibom State have benefited from the state government’s Assistive Device Clinic Days, an initiative aimed at improving mobility, independence and social inclusion through the distribution of wheelchairs and walking aids.
The latest edition of the programme, held on August 13 by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, brought together beneficiaries from across the state who underwent professional assessments before receiving mobility devices suited to their individual needs.
The clinic, held every second and fourth Thursday of the month, also featured the assembly and adjustment of the assistive devices by trained technicians to ensure comfort, safety and functionality.
The initiative is implemented by the Akwa Ibom State Government in partnership with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as part of ongoing efforts to support vulnerable citizens.
According to the Ministry, the programme has so far distributed over 200 wheelchairs and other assistive devices, complementing other humanitarian interventions under the state’s ARISE Free Food Security Programme and ARISE Compassionate Homes initiative.
Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, said the Governor Umo Eno-led administration remains committed to promoting the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Beneficiaries described the intervention as timely and life-changing, saying the assistive devices would enhance their mobility, restore confidence and enable them to participate more actively in everyday life.
