by Inclusive News Network

With the recent flood disaster ravaging some states across the country rendering hundreds of Persons destitute and homeless, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, James Lalu, has called for support for Persons with Disabilities affected by the flood.

Mr. Lalu in a statement on social media disclosed that the Commission, along with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, are exploring every means possible towards catering for Persons with Disabilities.

He said the Commission had earlier charged frontline humanitarian actors to always consider Persons with Disabilities and give them priority during evacuation of affected persons.

Lalu said: “Persons with Disability across the affected States can contact the Commission on our 24/7 rapid response WhatsApp hotline: +2347015370083 when there is need for evacuation.

According to him, the National Commission For Persons With Disabilities is working very closely with NEMA towards ensuring that no PWD life is lost to the disaster.

“Our essential team at the Commission is fully ready, working 24/7 to ensure that affected Persons with Disabilities are evacuated at any location.

“I therefore urge the community to remain calm as we continue working towards providing humanitarian assistance and protecting the lives of all Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria.

“I will also like to use this opportunity to sympathize with parents and the Ugandan Government over the fire outbreak at a school for the Blind Children in Mukono, Kampala on Tuesday morning which led to the loss of lives of Persons with Disabilities.”, he concluded.

Reports have it that PWDs account for nearly a quarter of recorded casualties in the recent flood disasters hitting Nigeria.
