The Zamfara State Persons with Disabilities Board (ZSPwDB) has organised a two-day Biannual Comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Awareness and Service Workshop for persons with disabilities in Gusau, aimed at improving access to health information and services among the disability community.
The workshop, held at the UBE Hall Headquarters in Gusau, brought together 100 participants from different disability clusters across the state. The programme focused on enhancing participants’ knowledge of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response, maternal health, cancer awareness, personal health management, and access to essential healthcare services.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Executive Chairman of ZSPwDB, Usman Ahmad Nahuche, stressed the need to equip persons with disabilities with the knowledge and resources required to make informed decisions about their health, dignity and rights. He said access to accurate health information remains critical to promoting inclusion and improving the wellbeing of persons with disabilities.
Facilitators and resource persons delivered presentations on a range of topics, including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Gender-Based Violence prevention and response, prevention and early detection of reproductive cancers, pregnancy care, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), and the provisions of the Zamfara State Disability Law. Resource persons at the workshop included Hafsatu Shehu Kakale, Dr. Khadija Muhammad Kanoma, Dr. Nura Bello, Yusuf Sabo Tsafe and other health and disability experts.
In his closing remarks, the Board Secretary, Dr. Bilyaminu Umar Kaura, urged participants to share the knowledge gained with members of their communities and disability groups. He described awareness as a key tool for promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing Gender-Based Violence and improving access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights services.
Kaura reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to sustaining advocacy, awareness campaigns and strategic partnerships aimed at advancing the health, rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities across Zamfara State.
