Youth Leader of the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD), Mr. Ebuka Okeke has made a courtesy call to the National Human Rights Commission headquarters (NHRC), Abuja to discuss important areas of partnership between the Commission and the Nigerian Deaf youth.
Led by Mr. Okeke, the Youth Team of NNAD had met with personnel at the Commission.
The Commission serves as an extra-judicial mechanism for the respect and enjoyment of human rights. It also provides avenues for public enlightenment, research, and dialogue in order to raise awareness of Human Rights issues, as regards to all people, including people with disabilities in Nigeria.
They discussed the issue of Disability Inclusion, and Partnership, among others, and explained why the Commission should as a matter of utmost importance carry Nigerian Deaf youth along in her activities. The group argued that this was in conformity with the provisions of the Disability Law.
INN reports that President Buhari had, on the 18th of January 2019, signed into law the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018, also known as National Disability Act. The Act was aimed to meet four goals for people with disabilities: equal opportunity, full participation in the community, self-sufficient living, and economic independence.
Mr. Okeke, a former NNAD Administrator, thanked the Commission for sending a Resource Person to lecture them on Human Rights as it relates to the mission of the Commission during the Team’s 1st National Youth Summit held at Uyo, Akwa Ibom in 2021.
In the meeting, commitments were made including the implementation of a 5% employment opportunity for PwDs as stipulated in Disability Law, and the provision of capacity-building training when it is needed.
The visit was productive as the Commission assured NNAD Youth of their commitments to continuous enhancement of inclusion and the need for further collaboration with the Deaf community.
