A firm, Procter & Gamble, has supported 100 child amputees with prosthetic legs.
At the annual walkathon, organised by The Irede Foundation, the firm urged well-meaning Nigerians to donate artificial limbs and funds to people living with disabilities.
The walk, held recently in Lagos was organised to provide more education, visibility and awareness about issues facing those with disabilities.
“Besides reaching out to more child amputees across Nigeria, the event aimed to raise enough money to provide 100 child amputees with prosthetic legs.
“The Irede Foundation is a non-profit organisation, dedicated to helping child amputees and their caregivers live independent and limitless lives. The annual two-kilometre advocacy walk takes place in several locations around the world concurrently, to educate the public about challenges faced by children with limb loss, and to call for government support. There is a clear and urgent need for better management of limb loss, limb differences, fracture, and the social integration, inclusion and participation of those living with disabilities.
“Since its inception eight years ago, the walk has raised awareness in 40 locations, including five strategic locations in Lagos state. The walk has directly reached 15,000 people, and indirectly touched ten million people globally.
“P&G is honored to throw its support behind such an important initiative, underlining its commitment to contribute meaningfully to ordinary people, especially the more vulnerable members of society.”
