The Inclusive Skills Development Initiative (ISDI) has concluded a two-day Training of Trainers workshop in Abuja aimed at equipping teachers and administrators with skills to adapt the National Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) curriculum for learners with disabilities.
The workshop, themed “Adapting the National Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) Curriculum for Learners with Disabilities,” brought together 80 participants drawn from the Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and the FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB).
Speaking at the event, ISDI Executive Director, Angelina Ugben, said the training marked another step towards promoting equitable and inclusive education where every learner, regardless of ability, has access to quality education and essential knowledge on health, relationships, safety and well-being.
According to her, learners with disabilities have continued to face major barriers in accessing Family Life and HIV Education due to inadequate learning materials and limited inclusive teaching methods.
“At ISDI, we believe inclusion is a right, not charity. Every child deserves to be seen, valued, protected and empowered,” she stated, while expressing appreciation to UNESCO Nigeria for partnering to advance inclusive education across the country.
The workshop featured interactive sessions, practical engagements and experience-sharing among participants, with teachers describing the training as timely and impactful in strengthening their capacity to deliver inclusive FLHE lessons in schools.
Participants included officials from the FCT Secondary Education Board led by the Director of Special Services Division, representatives of the Universal Basic Education Board and the National Human Rights Commission.
Teachers from several secondary schools across the FCT attended the training. Teachers from inclusive and special needs schools also participated, including the FCT School for the Deaf, Kuje; FCT School for the Blind Children, Jabi; FCT School for Special Needs Children, Kuje; JSS Pasali and JSS Kwali.
