Abuja, Nigeria – In a bold step toward promoting digital inclusivity, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has commenced a three-day training workshop on Basic ICT and Digital Skills for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The training, which kicked off yesterday, June 4, 2025, at the Barcelona Hotel in Abuja, brings together selected PWD representatives from various clusters across the country.
Organized in collaboration with Meteorite Logistics Limited and the ICT Department of the Commission, the initiative is designed to equip participants with essential digital competencies that are increasingly necessary for education, employment, and full participation in the digital economy.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, the Commission’s Director of ICT, Mr. Idemudia Lawrence, delivered a keynote address stressing the transformative power of digital access for marginalized communities.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a truly inclusive and equitable society,” Lawrence said. “In an increasingly digital world, access to ICTs and proficiency in digital skills are no longer a luxury but a fundamental necessity.”
Hon. Gufwan, through his representative, emphasized that bridging the digital divide is a crucial step toward empowering PWDs with tools for self-employment, innovation, and social integration. He noted the persistent challenges that PWDs face in accessing technology—from financial barriers to the absence of accessible infrastructure—and described the workshop as a direct intervention to address those gaps.
“This initiative goes beyond technical training; it is a statement of our commitment to genuine digital inclusion,” he said. “By equipping PWDs with relevant ICT skills, we are not only enhancing employability but also contributing to national development and promoting inclusive entrepreneurship.”
The Executive Secretary also expressed appreciation to the Commission’s ICT Department and Meteorite Logistics Limited for their dedication to the success of the programme and for ensuring a conducive environment for effective learning.
He urged the participants to make the most of the opportunity: “Embrace this training with enthusiasm and dedication. Ask questions, engage actively, and take full advantage of the expertise at your disposal. The skills you gain here can be a catalyst for your personal and professional growth.”
With this initiative, the NCPWD reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.
