The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of older persons with disabilities and elderly caregivers through financial assistance and free healthcare services aimed at improving their quality of life.
The Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, stated this at the 2026 Older Persons with Disabilities and Elderly Caregivers Support Programme organised by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry on November 2, 2026.
Ogunlende said the intervention reflected the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, under the THEMES Plus Agenda, to ensuring that no one is left behind. He emphasised that older persons with disabilities deserve dignity, adequate care and meaningful inclusion in society, regardless of their age or physical conditions.
The General Manager of LASODA, Mrs Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, explained that the programme was designed to provide targeted support for older persons with disabilities and elderly parents who continue to care for children with disabilities despite advancing age. She said the theme, “Ageing with Dignity,” underscored the importance of recognising and addressing the needs of these often-overlooked groups.
The programme featured financial assistance for beneficiaries and free healthcare services, including dental screening, consultations, scaling and polishing, blood pressure checks, medical consultations and the provision of basic medications.
Participants also received health education on issues affecting older persons. Dr Olufunmi Adeniyi delivered a presentation on Older Persons with Disabilities and Elderly Caregivers Support, while Dr Busuyi Oladunjoye spoke on “Hypertension in Older Adults: Causes and Management for Effective Wellbeing,” highlighting the importance of early detection, proper treatment and effective management of hypertension among older people.
One of the beneficiaries, 75-year-old Mr Eyitayo Aridegbe, commended the Lagos State Government and LASODA for the intervention, describing it as impactful. He particularly appreciated the dental services, revealing that he had never undergone dental screening, scaling and polishing throughout his 75 years. He also expressed gratitude for the financial assistance provided through the programme.
