The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has felicitated with Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, calling for renewed commitment to building a nation where every citizen can live, participate and contribute with dignity.
Gufwan described the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey as a nation and reaffirm the collective responsibility to promote equality, inclusion and national development. He noted that the establishment of the NCPWD marked a significant milestone in advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
According to him, the domestication of the disability law by several states and the establishment of state disability commissions further demonstrate growing commitment to disability inclusion across the country. While acknowledging that more work remains to be done, he said significant progress is being recorded in promoting the rights and participation of persons with disabilities.
The NCPWD boss also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for placing persons with disabilities on the national development agenda and supporting policies aimed at improving their welfare and participation in society.
Gufwan wished Nigerians a peaceful and successful Independence Day celebration, urging citizens to support persons with disabilities, reject all forms of discrimination and uphold the provisions of the law prohibiting discrimination against persons with disabilities.
He called on Nigerians to work collectively towards building a more inclusive nation where every citizen, regardless of disability, has equal opportunities to contribute to national development.
