Plateau State Deaf Women Association has empowered over 20 women with deafness on confectionary skills training in Jos, Plateau State.
The 3-day training workshop was organized by PDWA under the supervision of Development Exchange Centre Bauchi (DEC), supported by Bread for the World Protestant Development Service (Brot) from Germany.
Speaking during the closing ceremony held at women Educational Model Centre, Kashim Ibrahim Jos, last Saturday, Chairperson, Plateau State Deaf Women Association (PDWA), Mrs. Patricia Joshua Gyang disclosed that the aim of the 3 day training skills workshop was to empower 20 women with deafness on confectionary in Jos North Local Government Area (LGA). She added that their desire was to train more deaf women on skills acquisition on the Plateau.
She said that part of PDWA’s vision is to empower women with deafness to become economically independent, adding added that the continuation of the training will largely depend on support from their donor. She explained that the ongoing project is for 6 months.
Mrs. Gyang, who also doubles as Project Officer of the “Right Ways”, further explained that the importance of the training cannot be over emphasized, since the gesture is geared towards making the women with deafness to become self-reliant instead of going into begging in the society.
She said that the association was established in 2010 with hundreds of registered members across the State.
Mrs. Gyang also called on the wife of the Plateau State Governor, Mrs. Helen M. Mutfwang to carry the women with deafness along in her programmes and other beneficial activities. She equally appeals to Ministry for Women Affairs and Social Development to do same, so that the women with deafness would have a sense of belonging and fulfillment at all times.
Also speaking, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer for PDWA, Ms. Jenebu Anyebu challenged the participants to make good use of what they have learnt during the training on cake baking among others so as to enable them bring food on the table for their families at all times.
Ms. Anyebu thanked their donors for supporting them financially to carry out the training, saying that the training has given all the trainers opportunity to become self-reliant in order to support their families in different ways as for as life is concerned.
INN reports that the workshop featured doughnut making, puff-puff making, fish roll, egg roll, burns making (soft/rock burns) making of cup cakes, meat-pie making, presentations of certificates and ovens to the participants among others.
