Sign language has been identified as a critical tool for breaking communication barriers and ensuring inclusive and equitable access to education for deaf learners.
This was the focus of discussions at the 2026 Sign Language Awareness Conference organised by Value Hands Inclusive Organization in Onitsha, Anambra State, with the theme, “Sign Language: The Key to Inclusive Excellence in Education.”
Speaking at the conference, the convener, Miss Veronica Nwankwo, said education could not be considered truly excellent when some learners still faced barriers to accessing it. She noted that sign language enables teachers to better understand deaf students while helping parents communicate more effectively with their children.
Also speaking, a special educator and deaf ministry advocate, Rev. Albert Green, stressed that deafness does not limit intelligence or potential, but called for greater opportunities and inclusion to enable deaf people to fully develop and contribute their abilities.
Another speaker, Mr. Emmanuel Osita, who spoke on “Leveraging Technology and Innovation to Advance Deaf Education,” highlighted the potential of combining Artificial Intelligence with sign language to strengthen teaching, learning and access to educational resources for deaf students.
The conference also featured the unveiling of a magazine aimed at promoting awareness and inclusion, as well as a panel session where participants shared experiences, discussed challenges confronting deaf people and highlighted the need for greater inclusion of deaf learners in education.
