The Festus Fajemilo Foundation, led by Mr. Afolabi Fajemilo, has taken proactive steps toward ensuring the full implementation of the Osun State Disability Law. During a recent visit to the Osun State Bureau of Persons with Disabilities, the Foundation explored ways to collaborate with the agency in supporting the law’s execution.
INN reports that the Osun State Disability Bill, signed into law in September 2024, criminalizes discrimination against persons with disabilities and guarantees their rights to equal opportunities in employment, education, and public access. The law also mandates free education and healthcare, promoting dignity and independence for persons with disabilities.
Reflecting on the advocacy that led to the law’s enactment, Mr. Fajemilo acknowledged the efforts of disability groups, NGOs, and CSOs. He expressed gratitude to the Obokun constituency representative for championing the bill, the Assembly for passing it, and Governor Senator Jackson Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke for signing it into law. He emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to equipping government personnel with the knowledge needed for effective enforcement.
In response, Executive Secretary Rotarian Ayobami Oyewumi Oyetunde stressed the importance of unity among disability groups and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working with NGOs and international partners.
“We are committed to fostering an inclusive society where persons with disabilities have equal opportunities. We welcome all organizations willing to collaborate with us in achieving this goal,” he stated.
JONAPWD Chairman Comrade Oluwafemi Stephen also highlighted the need for continuous collaboration, urging NGOs to actively support government initiatives to ensure the success of the Disability Law.
