Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Akwa Ibom State have commended Governor Pastor Umo Eno for his dedication to inclusive healthcare, following the successful enrollment of 1,287 PWDs in the state’s free health insurance scheme.
The Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme (AKSHIS) enrollment exercise, held from February 10 to 21, 2025, was designed to provide free healthcare services to PWDs across 14 local government areas (LGAs). Uyo recorded the highest enrollment with 182 registered beneficiaries, followed by Ibesikpo (140), Ini (132), and Idu Uruan (130). Other LGAs with significant registrations include Essien Udim (105), Etim Ekpo (98), Okobo (96), Etinan (89), Nsit Ibom (68), Ikot Abasi (66), Esit Eket (57), Ika (56), Ikono (46), and Oron (22).
Speaking on the success of the initiative, Mrs. Nnene Bassey, Special Assistant to the Governor on Persons with Disabilities, praised Governor Eno’s inclusive leadership, describing his administration’s commitment to breaking barriers to healthcare access as commendable.
She also recognized Dr. Edikan Ackley, Director of AKSHIS, for his dedication and collaborative efforts in ensuring the success of the program. Additionally, she lauded the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP-AKS) Branch for their support, emphasizing their partnership with the NAGGMDP Foundation in Abuja as a major boost to the initiative.
Furthermore, Mrs. Bassey expressed appreciation to LGA Chairmen for supporting inclusive governance through the appointment of Special Assistants on PWD affairs. She also acknowledged the PWD Coordinators across the 14 LGAs for their role in advancing the Arise Agenda, which prioritizes social inclusion.
The AKSHIS enrollment exercise is a testament to Governor Eno’s commitment to equitable healthcare, with the second phase set to cover the remaining 17 LGAs in the state.
INN reports that expectations remain high for the next phase, which aims to further expand healthcare access for PWDs across Akwa Ibom.
