Lafia, Nasarawa State – The Leprosy Mission Nigeria has sought a strategic partnership with the Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission (NSDRC) to implement its proposed “Voice in Action” programme aimed at promoting the rights, inclusion, and welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the state.
The advocacy visit, held on Monday, was led by the State Coordinator of the Mission, Mr. Terver, who said the initiative is designed to strengthen collaboration with the Commission in addressing the challenges faced by PWDs, particularly discrimination, exclusion, and limited access to essential services.
According to the delegation, the “Voice in Action” programme seeks to amplify the voices of persons with disabilities by creating platforms for them to express their concerns while engaging stakeholders to identify practical areas for intervention. The Mission also requested the Commission’s input in identifying priority areas where support is most urgently needed.
Responding, the Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission, Hon. Saleh Barde Keana, welcomed the proposed partnership and commended The Leprosy Mission Nigeria for its commitment to advancing the welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.
Hon. Keana highlighted the shortage of essential assistive devices—including wheelchairs, white canes, crutches, hearing aids, and other mobility aids—as some of the major challenges confronting PWDs in Nasarawa State. He stressed that addressing these gaps would significantly improve their independence and quality of life.
The Commission’s Chairman also recommended that the “Voice in Action” programme incorporate public awareness campaigns and enlightenment workshops to educate communities on the rights, abilities, and contributions of persons with disabilities while tackling stigma and discrimination.
He further emphasized the need for reasonable accommodations in public spaces to ensure full accessibility, inclusion, and participation of PWDs in all aspects of society.
