Stakeholders in Nigeria’s climate and disability sectors have urged greater inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in climate change policies and programmes, describing their participation as essential to building climate-resilient communities.
The call was made during a media engagement organised by the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), where the organisation’s Executive Director, Grace Jerry, encouraged journalists to give greater attention to disability-inclusive climate action and amplify the voices of persons with disabilities.
Jerry noted that women and girls with disabilities are among those most affected by climate-related disasters such as floods and heatwaves, yet their experiences and contributions remain largely overlooked in mainstream media coverage.
She urged media organisations to change the narrative by portraying women and girls with disabilities as active contributors to climate solutions, stressing that accessible climate information, early warning systems and essential services are critical to protecting lives and advancing inclusive climate resilience in Nigeria.
