The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step towards strengthening disability inclusion with plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The initiative is being championed through a partnership between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA).
The proposal formed the focus of a courtesy visit by the management of LASODA to the MVAA, where both agencies discussed modalities for developing and implementing a disability-friendly vehicle identification system. The initiative is expected to improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for Persons with Disabilities across Lagos State.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Mr. Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the proposal as a landmark initiative that aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
According to him, the specialised number plates will enhance visibility and accessibility for Persons with Disabilities while promoting a more inclusive transport system in the state.
“This is indeed a laudable initiative that aligns perfectly with the principles of inclusive governance. We are committed to supporting this process and are confident that the collaboration between our agencies will yield positive results,” he said.
Mr. Muri-Okunola also disclosed that discussions had already commenced with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the proposed number plates. He added that the agency would begin the necessary administrative procedures and continue working closely with LASODA to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the visit was aimed at initiating strategic discussions on introducing specialised vehicle number plates that would meet the needs of Persons with Disabilities in Lagos State.
She explained that the initiative is intended to cover all categories of Persons with Disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers, noting that the system would significantly improve identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability community.
Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal stressed that inclusion should be reflected in every government policy and programme, describing the proposed number plates as another practical step towards creating a more accessible and equitable society.
She further urged stakeholders to see themselves as partners in advancing inclusion, emphasizing that building a society where Persons with Disabilities are recognised, respected and fully included is a shared responsibility.
Both LASODA and the MVAA reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the initiative, which is in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Special People’s Law. The law established LASODA to protect the rights of Persons with Disabilities, eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities in all aspects of society.
The meeting was attended by directors and senior management staff of both agencies, who pledged continued collaboration to ensure the successful introduction of the specialised vehicle number plates in Lagos State.
