Chief Ayuba Gufwan, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, has expressed his support for Haruna Mohammed Tsafe, who was recently elected as the new President of the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf during elections held in Ogun State.
In a press briefing during his visit to the UBEC headquarters in Abuja, Gufwan highlighted Tsafe’s victory as a sign of the Deaf community’s desire for strategic leadership and renewed hope.
He emphasized that all Nigerians, regardless of their backgrounds, should focus on strategic planning aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which centers on three main pillars: growing the economy, lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty, and creating an enabling environment for all.
Gufwan assured his commitment to supporting the Deaf community and all groups of persons with disabilities in Nigeria to foster a more inclusive society. He stated, “Persons with disabilities in Nigeria have gained societal recognition, and it is our responsibility to ensure their protection and representation.”
He added, “It’s time our achievements in appointments and elections transcend disability clusters. We must aim to hold positions such as Ministers, Governors, and Senators in Nigeria.”
Notably, Haruna Mohammed Tsafe serves as the Technical Assistant to the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
INN reports that the elections faced challenges, including a boycott from some ECs and opposition groups, which filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission on the eve of the elections to seek a postponement. However, the Commission proceeded with the elections, as the lawsuit files were submitted late, many delegates protested against the postponement and had already gathered in Ogun State, incurring significant transportation and accommodation costs.
