Group Urges Government to Support Integration of Sign Language Across Sectors

At the 2024 international awareness month and sign language day the Executive Director of API – Ability plus initiative-, Mrs. Janet Fasakin, called for widespread support from government bodies, organizations, and advocates to promote the integration of sign language in every sector of society, including healthcare, education, employment, and public services.

In her welcome address, Fasakin emphasized the importance of sign language as an integral part of Deaf culture and identity. “Today, we come together to honor our Deaf identity and celebrate the strength and resilience of the Deaf community,” she said. Recalling her personal journey, Fasakin shared how learning sign language helped her find a sense of belonging after becoming Deaf, stating, “It gave me a voice and a sense of pride in who I am.”

The theme for this year’s Deaf Awareness Week, “Sign Up for Sign Language Rights,” underscores the need for action to ensure the rights of Deaf individuals. Fasakin urged everyone present to advocate for the integration of sign language across all sectors of society, calling it a necessary step toward building a more inclusive and accessible world for the Deaf community.

In addition to her call to action, the event celebrated the graduates of a one-month sign language training program. The graduates were lauded for their efforts to create a more inclusive society, with Fasakin encouraging them to continue advocating for the rights of the Deaf.

Awards were also presented during the event. Mrs. Francis Ibagan, President of the ECOWAS Court of Women Forum, received an Inclusive Sign Language Award for her efforts to promote sign language in Nigeria. Mr. Martin Mary Falana, CEO of Kids & Teens, was honored for his advocacy for the Deaf community, while Servelead Global was recognized for their continued support. Additionally, certificates were awarded to students who completed the sign language training program.
