The Nigerian government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities, issuing a stern warning against abuses, especially in workplaces.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, represented by Franca Adiekweh, Director of Social Security and Cooperative Development, delivered this message during a road show aimed at sensitizing citizens on disability rights and encouraging their protection in all settings.
Ayuba Gufwa, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, expressed concern over rising violations of disability rights, particularly in informal sectors.
He called on the National Assembly to review the Disability Act and implement harsher penalties for offenders. Gufwa also highlighted the growing number of people living with disabilities due to accidents, health conditions, and aging, urging society to prioritize care for this community.
The road show was part of the activities commemorating the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities, reinforcing the government’s dedication to fostering an inclusive society.
