The inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in national development continues to gain both local and international attention, with heightened advocacy from the PWD community. A recent development in this regard is the collaboration between the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and the Nigeria Policy Support for Economic Growth (PSEG).
Professor Oyinkan Tasie, representing PSEG, visited Nigeria and engaged with the NCPWD to seek its partnership in integrating the nation’s 35 million PWDs into the agricultural policy process. Prof. Tasie emphasized that PSEG, a project implemented by Michigan State University, is committed to promoting inclusive and sustainable agriculture-led economic growth in Nigeria through research, training, and institutional capacity-building initiatives.
He explained that PSEG aims to foster long-term, sustainable benefits for diverse groups across Nigeria. The initiative will strengthen the capacity of federal and state governments, the private sector, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in evidence-based policy development and implementation, with a focus on inclusivity.
PWDs are central to this agenda, and PSEG’s approach is structured around three key objectives: Policy Formulation and Implementation, Policy Research And Policy Advocacy.
Prof. Tasie further noted that PSEG has already conducted visits to key states, including Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa, Plateau, Sokoto, and Zamfara, as part of its efforts to engage stakeholders and build momentum for inclusive policy frameworks.
This collaboration underscores a commitment to creating an enabling environment for PWDs in the agricultural sector, advancing their integration into Nigeria’s broader economic growth strategy.
