The Chairman of the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, Dr. David Obinna Anyaele, has called for greater inclusion, protection of rights and equal opportunities for persons with albinism, urging stakeholders to intensify efforts toward ending discrimination and social exclusion.
Dr. Anyaele made the call in a goodwill message to commemorate the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day, observed globally on June 13. He said the annual celebration provides an opportunity to promote awareness about the rights, dignity and unique challenges faced by persons with albinism across the world.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Proudly in My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones,” the disability rights advocate said the occasion serves as a reminder of the need to embrace human diversity and foster a society built on equality, respect and acceptance. He noted that persons with albinism continue to make significant contributions to national development despite facing health challenges, stigma, discrimination and other social barriers.
According to him, the Abia State Government, through the Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and wellbeing of persons with albinism in the state. These include the regular distribution of more than 300 sunscreen kits, financial support to the Abia State chapter of the Albinism Association of Nigeria, as well as backing for advocacy and public enlightenment programmes.
Dr. Anyaele reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to promoting an inclusive society where all citizens, regardless of skin colour or disability status, have access to opportunities and can participate fully in social, economic and political life. He stressed that inclusion remains essential to achieving sustainable development and social justice.
The commission chairman also called on government institutions, civil society organisations, development partners, communities and families to strengthen awareness campaigns aimed at addressing myths, stereotypes and discriminatory practices against persons with albinism. He emphasized the importance of collective action in advancing acceptance, protecting human rights and ensuring equal participation for persons with albinism in all aspects of society.
Congratulating persons with albinism in Abia State, Nigeria and across the globe on the occasion, Dr. Anyaele encouraged them to remain proud of their identity and continue contributing positively to the growth and development of their communities.
