The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Ayuba Burki Gufwan, has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 27th Democracy Day celebration, stating that democratic governance has played a significant role in advancing the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities across the nation.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, Gufwan paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democracy whose sacrifices contributed to the restoration and sustenance of democratic rule. He noted that their legacy should continue to inspire citizens to uphold democratic values, strengthen institutions, and embrace the rule of law as a means of resolving differences peacefully.
The NCPWD boss observed that 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance have provided a platform for disability rights advocacy, leading to the enactment and domestication of disability laws in several states. While acknowledging that challenges remain in empowering persons with disabilities and eliminating discrimination, he said notable progress has been made over the years.
Gufwan reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to promoting inclusion and bridging existing gaps affecting persons with disabilities. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for persons with disabilities under the Renewed Hope Agenda and called on Nigerians to treat persons with disabilities with dignity, love, and respect. He urged citizens to work collectively towards building an inclusive society where everyone can contribute to national development free from discrimination and stigmatization.
