The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting disability inclusion, equal opportunities, and social justice as Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a Democracy Day message issued on June 12, Abba Isa described the occasion as a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy heroes, including Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, and other patriots whose struggles helped restore democratic governance in Nigeria.
The presidential aide commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stating that it has strengthened Nigeria’s democratic journey through policies aimed at inclusive development and equal opportunities for all citizens. He noted that democracy can only be meaningful when every Nigerian, including persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, is guaranteed participation, dignity, and access to opportunities.
According to him, his office has continued to champion disability inclusion through advocacy and engagement with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to promote the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018. He said efforts have also been directed towards improving accessibility in public institutions, expanding employment and economic empowerment opportunities, and raising awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities.
Abba Isa further highlighted ongoing initiatives to promote inclusive education, accessible healthcare, improved disability data collection, and greater participation of persons with disabilities in governance and national development. He stressed that every Nigerian deserves equal access to opportunities and the chance to contribute meaningfully to national progress.
While acknowledging progress made in advancing disability rights, the presidential aide noted that more work remains to be done. He pledged continued advocacy for stronger institutional frameworks, increased support for disability-inclusive programmes, and greater representation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes.
He urged Nigerians to remain united, hopeful, and committed to strengthening democracy, adding that the dividends of democratic governance should be enjoyed by all citizens regardless of their social or physical circumstances.
