The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), through its Campaign for Improved Accessibility of Government Portals and Websites for Persons with Disabilities (CIAGOP), has organized a one-day training on privacy protection and online safety for persons with disabilities in Kano State.
The training, supported by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), was held at the PWDs Training Hub at CITAD’s head office on Saturday.
The programme brought together persons with disabilities from different communities across Kano State to enhance their understanding of digital security and promote the safe and responsible use of the internet. Participants received practical guidance on protecting their personal information and navigating digital platforms securely.
Facilitators trained participants on key areas including privacy and personal data protection, digital footprints, creating strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, identifying phishing emails and fake websites, preventing identity theft, safe use of social media, device security, reporting online abuse, and best practices for staying safe online.
The sessions featured presentations, practical demonstrations, group discussions, and interactive question-and-answer sessions that encouraged participants to share their experiences.
At the end of the training, participants demonstrated improved knowledge of online privacy and digital security and expressed greater confidence in identifying and avoiding cyber threats. They also pledged to apply the lessons learned in their daily online activities and share the knowledge with other persons with disabilities in their communities.
Speaking after the programme, participants commended CITAD and APC for organizing the capacity-building initiative and called for similar trainings to be held regularly to strengthen digital inclusion and online safety. CITAD reaffirmed its commitment to empowering persons with disabilities through digital skills development while advocating for accessible, secure, and inclusive digital environments for all.
