The Bauchi State Government has donated teaching and learning materials worth millions of naira to students of the Special Education Centre (SEC), Yelwa, as part of efforts to strengthen inclusive education and improve learning outcomes for children with disabilities.
The government also approved the inclusion of six volunteer teachers on the payroll as casual workers, with a commitment to subsequently absorb them into the state civil service as permanent and pensionable staff.
The State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ibrahim, announced the interventions while presenting educational materials to visually impaired and deaf students at the centre in Bauchi. The items distributed included four Braille machines, 150 Braille slates and styluses, 200 reams of Braille paper, 1,000 school bags, and 1,000 pairs of shoes.
Speaking during the presentation, the Commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the welfare and education of learners with disabilities. He also commended the school for emerging victorious at the recently concluded National Girls in ICT Competition held in Abuja, assuring that government support for the institution would be sustained.
Earlier, the Principal of the Special Education Centre, Hajiya Jamila Garba, expressed appreciation to the state government for its continued investment in the school. She pledged to redouble efforts toward making the institution a model centre for special education in Nigeria.
Some of the beneficiaries, including students Nuruddeen and Muhammad Tijjani, as well as one of the newly absorbed volunteer teachers and interpreter, Sabiu Yakubu, thanked the government for the educational support and employment opportunity. They pledged greater commitment to teaching, learning and academic excellence.
Following the distribution of the materials, the Commissioner monitored the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at the centre and inspected the hostels, dormitories and kitchen facilities to assess the quality of services being provided for the wellbeing of the students.
