The National Association of Deaf Students (NADS) at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rivers State Chapter, has called on stakeholders to actively support inclusive education across Rivers State, highlighting that disability should not be seen as a barrier.
The appeal was made by the Association’s president, Comrade Emmanuel Effiong Enensi, during the Youth Day of Service celebration, themed “Youthful and Useful.”
He urged the state government to rename the Special School for Handicapped Children to “Special Education Centre” or “School for Special Needs Children” to better reflect inclusivity.
Enensi further called on the government to implement policies that foster inclusive education, allocate resources and infrastructure for special education, and ensure that all schools are accessible to individuals with disabilities.
The event, co-hosted with the Principal of Special School for Handicapped Children, drew 207 participants. Principal Nasikpo Friday Nledi highlighted the empowering role of inclusive education, sharing examples of successful individuals with disabilities worldwide. “People with disabilities (PWDs) can achieve what others can; they deserve quality education,” he stated.
Guest Speaker Ambassador Ndifreke Andrew-Essien encouraged students to pursue their dreams without limitations, saying, “Don’t limit yourself; apply yourself today for a brighter tomorrow. You can become anything you aspire to, so don’t become your own barrier.”
The event also included a donation of 100 exercise books and 100 pens to students with disabilities, along with talent showcases through drama, cultural dances, quizzes, knowledge competitions, and interactive sessions.
