The Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi has charged Women with Disabilities to always prepare to ward off any incursion from those she described as “sex predators ” from their private spaces.

Speaking at a sensitisation programme on Gender-Based Violence for Women which was organised by the office of the Disability Affairs in collaboration with the office of Ekiti State First Lady, Erelu Fayemi disclosed that the Kayode Fayemi led administration is committed to implementing the Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Laws(GBV Laws) and other relevant laws in protecting the right of women, especially those living with disabilities.

She explained that Fayemi’s administration had come much in the area of Empowerment and creating employment opportunities for the women in the category urging them to ensure the good gesture of the government is sustained after the exit of the current government.

According to Mrs Fayemi in the year 2020, there was an upsurge of violence against women, particularly women with disabilities during the nationwide lockdown caused by the outbreak of Coronavirus.

Mrs Fayemi told the audience a pathetic story of an armless crippled woman who was sexually abused by an unidentified sex predator leading to pregnancy. She explained that the survivor’s problem was compounded when she eventually gave birth to twins.

The First Lady explained that the survivor was overpowered since she couldn’t defend herself each time the alleged predator pounced on her, hence she was abused repeatedly.

” When I saw her in a wheelchair in the hospital with pregnancy somebody shouted ” who impregnated this woman and the woman responded that it was one man who usually took advantage of her and there was no way she could resist him with her condition.

“Sex predators don’t care whether one is disabled or not, or wear a skimpy skirts or not. They can do it to anyone. I have seen many physically challenged being sexually abused, even an 85- year old woman was also a victim. What could have attracted her to these perpetrators?

“Apart from discrimination, the most urgent issues we are solving are lack of economic empowerment, education and training for the people living with disabilities. Though, while some of you are educated, you knew what you went through to acquire this. One aspect we have been able to ensure is that you have access to healthcare.

“To lessen your plights, the Government of Governor Fayemi put in place office of Disability Affairs under Ministry of Women Affairs to deal with issues of social welfare and social justice for people with disabilities”.Erelu Fayemi said.

In her presentation on ‘Ekiti Gender-Based Violence Prohibition and support for women with Disabilities’, a lawyer and Human Rights Advocate, Mrs Rita Ilevbare, said no efforts should be spared to tackle the rampancy of psychological, economic, physical and sexual violence against women.

Ilevbare, who is the Executive Director, Gender Relevance Initiative Promotion (GRIP), said from reports, that women are mostly victims of GBV and that such tendencies are more convenient for people living with disabilities.

Ilevbare stated that “the culture of patriarchy, where men are favoured or perceived to be leaders have been fueling GBV in the country.

“Anything that tends to put women at the mercy of men is violence and it must be stopped. It is devastating to be a woman and carrying disabilities, it is double jeopardy. And we also have a culture of silence, people don’t want to talk because of stigmatization. Violence and discrimination are twin evils we must confront at all costs.

“Many cases of unwarranted pregnancy, miscarriages, threats, sickness, joblessness are caused by GBV. But the good news is that, of all the states that have GBV laws, none has secured more favourable judgements than Ekiti. No state enforces laws that protect women’s rights like Ekiti.

“Some of these laws have made women claim their rights and many women had benefited. All these laws also protected people with disabilities. As the government develops the political will, we must complement with community will to be able to make headway in this fight.

“Please, let us speak up, don’t die in silence. The government has put in place the right laws to ensure that every woman, every man, boy and girl have their rights protected, respected and promoted in Ekiti”, Ilevbare said.
