The Yobe State Government, in collaboration with development partners, has donated 350 tricycles and 100 dignity kits to persons with disabilities in the state. The distribution was part of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration, held in Damaturu.
Fatima Mohammed Faga, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, presented the tricycles on behalf of the Ministry for Wealth Creation, Empowerment, and Employment Generation to the state chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Usman Bura.
Speaking during the event, Faga reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering inclusivity. “This initiative reflects our collective determination to ensure persons with disabilities reach their full potential,” she said.
Themed “Transformative Leadership for Inclusive Development,” the event was supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and attended by stakeholders, security personnel, development partners, and members of the disability community.
In addition, Care International, an international non-governmental organization, donated 100 dignity kits to further support persons with disabilities.
In his keynote address, Mr. Oghene Tega, Sector Coordinator of the Disability Working Group (DWG), revealed progress in data collection for persons with disabilities across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states. “We now have about 60 percent of the data of persons with disabilities in the BAY states,” he stated.
Meanwhile, JONAPWD chairman Usman Bura called on the state government to sign the disability bill into law, describing it as “crucial for safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities.”
Members of the disability community expressed their gratitude to the state government and development partners for the support and pledged to make effective use of the donated items.
