Mr. Chuma Emmanuel Onah, a staunch disability rights advocate, has applauded the Nigerian federal government’s commitment to fostering inclusivity, expressing gratitude for the successful celebration of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).
Themed “Amplifying Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” the event showcased the government’s dedication to empowering persons with disabilities. Mr. Onah commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s supportive policies and for creating a welcoming platform for advocacy, which he described as a hopeful gesture of humanity and inclusion.
The event also highlighted the efforts of Hon. Muhammed Abba Isa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, and Mr. Ayuba Gufwam, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities. Mr. Onah praised their steadfast leadership in advancing disability rights in Nigeria.
Advocating for deeper reforms, Mr. Onah called on the president to establish disability commissions at state and local government levels, urging that these be led by individuals with disabilities to ensure their voices shape policy. He further emphasized the need for increased funding for the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to achieve lasting change and sustainable development goals.
