Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State have hailed the appointment of a Person with Disability as Special Adviser on disability matters and the distribution of tricycles to members of the disability community as a landmark achievement for inclusion and empowerment in the state.
The initiative, facilitated by the Executive Chairman of Wukari LGA and approved by the Taraba State Government, was unveiled during a ceremony where ten tricycles were presented to beneficiaries. The tricycles were handed over by the Aku Uka of Wukari, His Royal Majesty Dr. Shekarau Angyu Masa-Ibi, CON, who personally participated in the distribution exercise.
Speaking on the development, the Southern Coordinator of the Taraba State Disability Commission, Hon. Mary James Gaisa, described the event as historic, noting that it marked the first time a Person with Disability had been appointed as Special Adviser in the local government while also benefiting from a government-backed tricycle empowerment programme.
Gaisa said the appointment would ensure that persons with disabilities have a direct voice in governance and decision-making, while the tricycles would improve mobility, support livelihoods and enhance the independence of beneficiaries. She noted that the twin initiatives demonstrate a practical commitment to inclusion and equal participation.
She commended the Executive Chairman of Wukari LGA for championing the programme and creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in governance. She also appreciated the Governor of Taraba State for approving the project and supporting policies aimed at promoting the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The disability advocate further praised the Aku Uka of Wukari for personally presenting the tricycles, describing the gesture as a strong message of acceptance and support for members of the disability community.
According to Gaisa, persons with disabilities are contributing members of society, including professionals, artisans, teachers, farmers and entrepreneurs, who require equal opportunities to realize their full potential. She urged other local government councils and stakeholders across Taraba State to emulate the Wukari example by investing in accessibility, assistive devices, employment opportunities and inclusive governance.
She also called for stronger implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved when all citizens, regardless of disability status, are given the opportunity to participate fully in society.
The appointment and empowerment initiative, she added, marks a significant step forward for disability inclusion in Taraba State and offers a model that can be replicated across other local government areas in the state.
