Woman absconds after giving birth in Anambra hospital •Man who raped 11-year-old deaf girl in police net

A statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, said that police operatives attached to Juvenile and Welfare Unit, Osumenyi Division, visited the scene and efforts are being intensified to trace the fleeing mother in order to bring her to justice.

The statement reads in part: “On the 12/06/ 2019, at about 1pm, there was a report at Osumenyi Police Station by the officials of Primary health care center Obiuno village in Osumeyi that on Monday 10/06/2019 at about 11:20am, a yet to be identified pregnant woman who was at the point of delivery rushed to the health care center. She was quickly attended to and fifteen minutes later she successfully delivered a baby girl while the nurses left to attend to other patients.

“However, shortly after the delivery, the woman abandoned the baby and disappeared to unknown destination leaving behind the child at the mercy of the nurses at the health care center.”

According to the PPRO, arrangements have been concluded to hand over the baby to government orphanage for custodial care.

Meanwhile, police detectives attached to B Division, Awka, has arrested 28-year-old Ifeanyi Alagba for alleged rape of a minor.

The suspect, who resides at Amoko road, Ifite Awka, is said to have had unlawful carnal knowledge of an 11-year-old deaf and dumb girl at same address while the victim’s mother was away.

The state police spokesman in a statement said that the scene of the incident was visited by police detectives and the victim was taken to the hospital for medical examination. “Case is under investigation,” the PPRO said.
