“We Can’t Wait Any Longer” – Taraba Disability Advocate Urges Assembly to Pass Bill

by Inclusive News Network

A strong appeal has been made to the Taraba State House of Assembly to fast-track the long-awaited Disability Commission Bill—seen as a critical step toward inclusion and justice for persons with disabilities.

Wanderimam Tenyang, Chair of the Nigeria Association of the Blind, Taraba chapter, made the call in an open letter to Speaker John Kizito Bonzena. While commending the lawmakers for moving the bill to its second reading, Tenyang urged them to act swiftly to ensure its final passage.

According to him, many people with disabilities in the state face dire conditions, often resorting to street begging due to unemployment and lack of social support.

“The establishment of a Disability Commission isn’t just a formality—it’s a lifeline,” Tenyang said. “It will create jobs, tackle poverty, and address critical challenges like access to education, mobility, and social inclusion.”

The proposed commission is expected to serve as a dedicated agency to drive disability-focused policies and ensure that support reaches those who need it most.

Tenyang emphasized that passing the bill would be a major stride not only for people with disabilities but also for Taraba State’s broader development goals. He called on lawmakers to treat the bill as a priority and respond to the community’s long-standing plea.

“For us, this is not just another law. It’s about dignity, opportunity, and the chance to live fully,” he added.
