ABEOKUTA — Persons with disabilities (PWDs), widows, older persons and other vulnerable residents of Ogun State are among the beneficiaries of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Food Outreach Scheme spearheaded by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The food distribution exercise took place at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, with the First Lady represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, commended the First Lady for the initiative, describing it as a thoughtful intervention that provides much-needed relief to disadvantaged Nigerians, particularly vulnerable households facing economic challenges.
Abiodun noted that the strength of any society is measured not only by the wealth it generates but also by how effectively it supports its most vulnerable members.
He emphasised the need for sustained interventions in food security, healthcare, education, skills development and economic empowerment to address poverty and improve the living conditions of vulnerable populations.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote social inclusion, improve livelihoods and ensure that no segment of society is left behind.
He also appreciated the First Lady, donors and other partners supporting the nationwide initiative, noting that the programme had reached Ogun State after covering the Federal Capital Territory and 31 other states.
Abiodun further pledged his administration’s continued support for people-centred initiatives that complement President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and improve the welfare of residents.
The initiative highlights the importance of social protection programmes in addressing food insecurity and providing assistance to vulnerable households, including persons with disabilities who may face additional barriers to economic opportunities and essential services.
