Strengthening Accessibility: Agency, LASPA Unite to Champion Inclusive Parking for Lagosians with Disabilities

by Inclusive News Network

In a powerful show of unity and purpose, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) have pledged to work more closely in advancing the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)—with a focus on transforming parking facilities to meet their needs.

The renewed collaboration was cemented during a courtesy visit by LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, and her team to LASPA’s headquarters in Ikeja. The two agencies explored ways to translate policy into practical, impactful changes that would ensure inclusivity in public parking spaces across the state.

Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal emphasized that genuine accessibility is about functionality and dignity—not just ticking boxes. “True accessibility means creating spaces that actually work for those who need them, not just installing ramps or signage for show,” she said.

She expressed concern over the continued misuse of PWD-designated parking spots and other facilities, highlighting how such negligence frustrates the daily lives of individuals with disabilities. “We must move beyond tokenism. These spaces are not a luxury—they’re a necessity,” she stressed, urging for stronger enforcement mechanisms and public education.

On her part, LASPA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to inclusive development. She acknowledged the importance of a strategic partnership with LASODA to ensure that no Lagosian is left behind due to physical or digital barriers.

Mrs. Adelabu also assured the visiting team of LASPA’s ongoing efforts to improve accessibility not only in physical parking structures but also in the Authority’s online platforms—making digital access a key part of its inclusivity drive.
