Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has approved a vocational skills training programme aimed at empowering members of the Sokoto State Association of the Deaf with self-reliance and income-generating opportunities.
The initiative followed a visit by the leadership of the Association, led by its Chairman, Abubakar Abdulsalami, during which members reaffirmed their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Responding to the delegation, Senator Wamakko directed that arrangements be made to commence intensive training for deaf persons in various vocational trades, including tailoring, automobile mechanics, knitting, shoe repair, computer and information technology, henna application, barbing, and other skills based on participants’ interests.
According to the Senator’s office, the training programme is scheduled to begin next week and is expected to equip beneficiaries with practical skills to promote economic independence and improve their livelihoods.
In a related gesture, Senator Wamakko also sponsored the dowry and wedding expenses of some members of the Deaf Association who indicated their intention to marry, further demonstrating his support for the welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.
