Badagry, Lagos State — The Association of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Badagry Headquarters, has expressed deep concern over what it described as the continued neglect of persons with disabilities in the Badagry Federal Constituency, calling on elected representatives to demonstrate stronger commitment to inclusion and support.
Speaking during a press conference held on Sunday in Badagry, the President of the Association of Persons with Disabilities, Badagry Headquarters, Mr. Sejoro Ekundayo, said the association had made several attempts to engage elected representatives through meetings, correspondence, and advocacy efforts, but noted that these efforts had produced limited outcomes. He explained that the situation has left many persons with disabilities in the community feeling overlooked and insufficiently supported.
He clarified that the intention of the association was not to attack or discredit elected officials but to draw attention to the urgent need for improved welfare, empowerment, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. He emphasized that every citizen, regardless of ability, deserves dignity, access to essential services, and meaningful participation in society.
The association identified key challenges facing persons with disabilities in Badagry, including limited empowerment and economic support opportunities, inadequate employment prospects in government and public institutions, poor accessibility in public buildings and infrastructure, insufficient provision of assistive devices, and weak representation in decision-making processes. It also highlighted the need for stronger support for pupils and students with disabilities, as well as special needs teachers, in public schools.
While calling for renewed dialogue and decisive action from elected representatives, the association commended local government chairmen in Badagry for demonstrating commitment to disability inclusion, particularly through the appointment of Special Advisers on Persons with Disabilities, plans to establish disability desks, and empowerment initiatives for persons with disabilities.
The association urged all stakeholders to work collaboratively toward building a more inclusive, accessible, and equitable society where no resident is left behind.
