Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Kano State have urged the government to fast-track the establishment of a commission dedicated to their welfare and rights.
A coalition of PWDs and other relevant stakeholders, under the aegis of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Nigeria, led the call during a roundtable discussion held on Tuesday, 11th February 2025, at Mambayya House, Gwammaja. The discussion focused on drafting a communiqué and developing advocacy strategies for the creation and implementation of a PWDs Commission in Kano State.
The group emphasized that establishing the commission is crucial for promoting the rights and inclusion of PWDs while ensuring their equal participation in society.
“We stress the need for an inclusive and participatory approach in the establishment and implementation of the PWDs Commission, ensuring the active involvement of PWDs and their organizations,” the group stated.
The coalition also called for intensified advocacy and awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of the PWDs Commission and the benefits of inclusive governance.
“We urge the Kano State Government, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to mobilize resources, including funding and technical support, to facilitate the establishment and effective implementation of the PWDs Commission.
“We encourage stakeholders to foster collaboration and partnerships to strengthen advocacy efforts and ensure the successful operation of the PWDs Commission,” they added.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to working together to advocate for the establishment and full implementation of the PWDs Commission in Kano State.
