The Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Hon. Kassim Mohammed, has pledged automatic employment for qualified Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), reaffirming the Board’s commitment to inclusive education and equal opportunities in the state’s basic education sector.
Hon. Mohammed made the pledge while receiving the Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission (NSDRC), Hon. Saleh Barde Keana, and members of the Commission’s management team during an advocacy and familiarisation visit to the NSUBEB headquarters in Lafia on Tuesday.
The visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two agencies to advance inclusive basic education and ensure that the rights of Persons with Disabilities are fully integrated into education policies and programmes across Nasarawa State.
Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Keana congratulated the NSUBEB Chairman on his recent appointment by Governor Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule and commended the Board for ongoing reforms aimed at improving the quality of basic education in the state.
He noted that deeper collaboration between the Commission and NSUBEB was essential to promoting inclusive development, stressing that every child, regardless of disability, deserves access to quality education.
“The Disability Rights Law is clear on inclusion. We are here to partner with SUBEB to ensure that no child with a disability is left behind in our basic education system,” Keana said.
The NSDRC Chairman also appealed to the Board to implement the five per cent employment quota for Persons with Disabilities in the ongoing NSUBEB recruitment exercise, in line with the directive of Governor Abdullahi Sule. He said the policy would provide qualified PWDs with equal opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the state’s public service.
Responding, Hon. Kassim Mohammed described the visit as timely and assured the Commission of the Board’s readiness to strengthen collaboration on inclusive education initiatives. He reaffirmed NSUBEB’s commitment to ensuring that Persons with Disabilities are adequately represented in recruitment exercises and other educational programmes.
The NSUBEB Chairman further pledged that qualified Persons with Disabilities would be automatically employed, underscoring the Board’s resolve to go beyond the statutory five per cent employment quota and promote greater inclusion within the education sector.
The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing disability inclusion, expanding access to quality education, and creating equal opportunities for Persons with Disabilities in Nasarawa State.
