NCPWD, Partners Hold Strategic Retreat to Enhance Disability Policy Implementation

by Inclusive News Network

In a bid to strengthen its policy implementation, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in collaboration with Sightsavers, has convened a three-day planning retreat. The event, held in Karu, Nasarawa State, on November 25, 2024, focuses on creating an implementation plan for existing policies and developing seven additional operational frameworks.

Speaking at the retreat’s opening, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, extended gratitude to development partners for their support. He encouraged participants to use the retreat as an opportunity to recalibrate efforts toward achieving the commission’s mandate.

“This gathering enables us to sharpen our focus and ensure that our policies are not just documents but are actionable steps toward improving lives,” he remarked.

Chief Gufwan also highlighted the significance of his tenure, coinciding with the end of the moratorium period, marking a new era of enforcement and compliance with disability laws in Nigeria.

He acknowledged persistent challenges within the disability movement, particularly the weak organizational structures of some advocacy groups, which he said hinder their effectiveness. Nonetheless, he expressed optimism about progress in the National Assembly, where steps are being taken to align frameworks with the principles of inclusion and accessibility.

The retreat offered a platform for stakeholders to assess progress, identify gaps, and strategize for the advancement of disability rights and inclusion nationwide.

The NCPWD reiterated its commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities through policy development, enforcement, and collaborative efforts with key partners.
