Empowering Women with Disabilities: 70 Beneficiaries Receive N4.7m Support in Lagos

by Inclusive News Network

Seventy women with disabilities in Lagos have been empowered with N4.7 million in resources and training, thanks to a collaboration between Sightsavers, Unilever Nigeria Plc, and the Growing Businesses Foundation (GBF).

The initiative, under the Strengthening Access to Business Education and Inclusion (SABI) Woman Project, aims to foster economic empowerment for women with disabilities through entrepreneurship and financial inclusion.

According to Sightsavers Programme Officer, Ms. Anita Kevin:

“Out of 100 women trained in Lagos, we identified 70 ready to access business skills. Each of them is receiving a ‘business basket’ valued at N60,000 to help launch or grow their businesses.”

The program includes a four-day intensive training session conducted by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), focusing on critical skills like customer service, digital marketing, and record-keeping.

To sustain the beneficiaries’ progress, GBF has enlisted Retail Sales Representatives (RSPs) to provide ongoing support. These representatives will monitor sales performance, assist with inventory restocking, and ensure proper record maintenance.

One of the beneficiaries, Ms. Christiana Olowolagba, expressed delight: “This opportunity is a blessing. For PWDs, access to discounted products and doorstep delivery from RSPs makes the process seamless. I’m grateful to the organizers for their support.”

This empowerment program underscores the importance of inclusion and capacity building for persons with disabilities, paving the way for sustainable economic growth.
