The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has once again demonstrated its firm commitment to empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), through a transformative training and empowerment initiative held at the Catholic Secretariat in Durumi, Garki, Abuja.
The impactful event brought together individuals from various disability groups and offered them practical tools and knowledge to venture into Point-of-Sale (POS) businesses—paving a path toward financial independence and self-reliance.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan—represented by Mr. Idowu, Acting Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics—described the programme as a vital milestone in the Commission’s mission to build a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria.
“Empowering persons with disabilities is central to our vision,” Hon. Gufwan remarked. “This POS business training is a clear example of how we can provide real economic opportunities. We urge government agencies, NGOs, and stakeholders to join hands with us in expanding such initiatives and ensuring that PWDs are not left behind in national development.”
Mr. Francis, who facilitated the business training session, encouraged participants to remain committed and professional in their business approach, emphasizing that while POS ventures can be profitable, success hinges on diligence and integrity.
One of the event’s highlights was the ceremonial handover of POS machines to beneficiaries, led by Mr. Olasuji Adewale, the former Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics. He applauded NCPWD for its steadfast dedication to economic inclusion and challenged beneficiaries to seize the opportunity to build sustainable livelihoods.
Mrs. A. Oguntade, Human Resources Manager at NCPWD, revealed that the initiative marks the second phase of a broader strategic programme aimed at empowering PWDs.
“This intervention reflects our ongoing commitment to economic sustainability for persons with disabilities,” she said. “We encourage beneficiaries to make the most of this support and to become active contributors to the nation’s socio-economic fabric. The government remains determined to leave no one behind.”
As NCPWD continues its efforts, the Commission envisions a society where persons with disabilities are not just included but are empowered to lead, innovate, and thrive—turning disability into possibility.
