NCPWD Calls for Increased Funding Support at National Education Loans Fund

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), led by its Executive Secretary, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, made a significant appeal today for enhanced funding support for students with disabilities in Nigeria. This advocacy took place at the National Education Loans Fund (NELFUND) office.

This initiative aligns with Sections 18 to 20 of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018, which mandates equitable access to education for persons with disabilities.

During the meeting, Chief Gufwan commended NELFUND’s commendable efforts to include students with disabilities in its funding initiatives. He highlighted the growing number of young people with disabilities seeking educational sponsorship, emphasizing their potential contributions to society if given proper support.

“Our office has received numerous requests from bright, ambitious individuals with disabilities who are eager to advance their education and skills,” Chief Gufwan stated. He further stressed the Commission’s commitment to data-driven strategies to advance its mandate, urging society to view disabilities as sources of resilience and strength rather than limitations.

Chief Gufwan also encouraged NELFUND to establish a sustainable repayment plan that would empower students to reach their educational and career aspirations, thereby ensuring the program’s long-term impact.

Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of NELFUND, expressed appreciation for the NCPWD delegation’s visit and reaffirmed NELFUND’s mission to support Nigerian youths facing financial challenges through educational loans. He outlined specific policies designed to ease loan access for students with disabilities, recognizing them as essential stakeholders in the agency’s mission to foster educational inclusion.

Additionally, Mr. Sawyerr shared that NELFUND has formed a committee dedicated to addressing the unique needs of students with disabilities, including those who may acquire disabilities during their studies.

“We are excited to announce the upcoming launch of the NELFUND Foundation, which will provide targeted support for students who unexpectedly face disabilities,” he said.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Sawyerr encouraged resilience in the face of adversity, affirming that courage is essential for success in life.

This collaboration between NCPWD and NELFUND represents a major step toward ensuring that students with disabilities receive the support they need to succeed in their educational journeys.
