The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) has empowered over 15 persons with disabilities (PWDs) and individuals affected by leprosy in Kogi State, distributing start-up kits valued at over ₦8 million to enhance their livelihoods and living conditions.
In his address, Dr. Sunday Udo, the National Director of TLMN, explained that the initiative aims to help beneficiaries lead fulfilling lives, create employment opportunities, and positively impact their families and communities. Represented by Sandra Sochima Ijere, Dr. Udo emphasized the organization’s commitment to building an inclusive society where leprosy is eradicated, and those affected by disabilities and the disease can thrive.
He highlighted the organization’s vision of achieving “zero leprosy” in Nigeria, including zero transmission, zero disability due to leprosy, and zero discrimination against affected individuals. To achieve this, TLMN partnered with The Leprosy Mission Sweden to launch the SCRINN Project, which stands for Strengthening Community Resilience in Northern Nigeria. The project aims to foster sustainable livelihoods, empower communities, and advocate for inclusion.
Dr. Udo also spoke about the mission’s awareness campaigns to combat stigma and educate the public about the curability and preventability of leprosy.
As part of their ongoing efforts, TLMN enrolled 50 children from families affected by leprosy and disabilities across Kogi communities in vocational training programs in November 2022. Skills taught included tailoring, baking, automobile repairs, welding, and more. Out of the participants, 33 received start-up kits in October 2023, with an additional 15 beneficiaries receiving tools during the latest phase.
“These start-up kits represent hope and the potential for a brighter future,” Dr. Udo noted, adding that beneficiaries would receive mentorship and monitoring to ensure their success and independence.
In his remarks, Kogi State Programme Officer Reuben Isaiah congratulated the beneficiaries, urging them to use the kits effectively. He warned against selling the items and announced that recipients would sign agreements committing to proper use.
Idris Ozovehe Muraina, Chairperson of KONGONET, commended TLMN for its dedication to uplifting vulnerable groups, while the Commissioner of Women Affairs, represented by Onumoko Adeniyi, encouraged beneficiaries to maximize the opportunities presented by the initiative.
