The Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba K. Yusuf, has been widely praised by the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) community for his progressive decision to establish a dedicated Department of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Women, Children, and PWDs. This landmark initiative is seen as a crucial step toward advancing the rights and well-being of PWDs in the state.

In a letter of appreciation, Engr. Abdul Haruna, a passionate advocate for disability rights, lauded Governor Yusuf’s visionary leadership. He described the establishment of the department as a transformative milestone that reaffirms the government’s commitment to inclusivity and social equity.

“This remarkable achievement is a testament to His Excellency’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that no individual is marginalized in the development and progress of our beloved state,” Haruna stated.

He further emphasized that the creation of the PWDs Department is a major breakthrough for the disability community, as it provides a structured platform for empowerment, inclusion, and active participation in governance and society.

As part of this initiative, Dr. Binta Bala, PhD, has been appointed as the pioneer Director of the newly established department. Her selection is widely regarded as a strategic move, given her deep understanding of disability-related challenges, coupled with her personal experience, expertise, and commitment to advocacy.

It is anticipated that the Kano State Government’s collaboration with the new department under Dr. Bala’s leadership will foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for PWDs, ensuring that their rights and needs are adequately addressed.

In her remarks, Dr. Bala expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. She emphasized that the appointment will significantly contribute to uniting persons with disabilities under a common cause, fostering stronger advocacy, and driving meaningful change. “I am truly honored by this appointment, and I am committed to making a positive impact on society,” she affirmed.

According to a communiqué released following the announcement, the establishment of the Department of PWDs is a significant milestone in Kano State’s journey toward inclusivity. The PWDs community remains optimistic and looks forward to witnessing the tangible benefits of this initiative in the near future.
