A group has launched project to train deaf teachers on integrating ICT skills in Multilingual Multimodal Teaching.
The project was launched at Oharisi Secondary School, Special Education Centre, in Ughelli, Delta State with support by Leadership Effectiveness, Accountability and Professionalism (LEAP) Africa and the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF).
Speaking during the event, lead coordinator, Amala Njelita thanked LEAP Africa and NYFF for their support. He emphasized that the project will significantly enhance pedagogical approaches at the school.
He noted that the project aims to train teachers on Multilingual Multimodal Pedagogy (MMP) and students on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), specifically to prepare them for computer-based tests outside school.
Speaking on the project’s timeline, Njelita stated that it began with consultations with the school management, which led to the first teachers’ training session on July 8, 2024.
This session was facilitated by Mr. Nzem Emeka, an expert in Multilingual Multimodal Pedagogy (MMP), who received training offered by Deaf Education Employment Empowerment (Deaf E3) team from Gallaudet University.
In the words of the school director, Mrs. Egboduku Agnes: “I am optimistic that the project will equip teachers with the skills they need to educate deaf students and will also empower students with computer literacy skills that will be beneficial to them beyond school.”
INN reports that the second phase of the project, involving ICT skills training for students, was completed on July 19, 2024.
The third phase of the program implementation which will involve deaf teachers will continue this month August, 2024.
