Port Harcourt, Nigeria – In a bid to advance the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in underserved communities, FAECARE Foundation has officially launched and commissioned key components of its Disability Rights Initiative Project: Rural Rivers (DRIP:RR). The event, held in April in Port Harcourt, marks a major stride in the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to foster disability advocacy and inclusive development in Rivers State.
This significant milestone follows the project’s initial launch in March and involved the training, inauguration, and commissioning of Disability Peer Mentors as well as the Central Inter-Task Action Group (CITAG). These structures are vital to the implementation and success of DRIP:RR, which is powered by FAECARE Foundation with support from the Disability Rights Fund.
The occasion brought together an inspiring mix of trained disability advocates from previous DRIP projects, community representatives, and members of the newly inaugurated CITAG. Participants engaged in impactful sessions that explored the objectives of the DRIP:RR project, deepened understanding of disability and inclusive practices, and clarified the responsibilities expected of both CITAG members and Disability Peer Mentors.
A major highlight of the event was the formal establishment of these two groups, setting the stage for their work across ten local government areas in rural Rivers State. The initiative is designed to be multifaceted, combining advocacy, training, and grassroots engagement to ensure persons with disabilities are not left behind in community development efforts.
With the groundwork now in place, FAECARE Foundation is optimistic about the future of the project and the positive transformation it promises to deliver. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to promoting disability rights and inclusive practices, expressing confidence that the support of stakeholders and the enthusiasm of peer mentors will drive meaningful change.
