The Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, has announced plans to engage sign language interpreters as part of efforts to strengthen inclusive healthcare delivery for persons with disabilities.
This follows a courtesy visit by the Senior Special Assistant to the Katsina State Governor on Persons with Disabilities, Lt. Hudu Usman (Rtd), who underscored the urgent need for accessible and disability-friendly health services across the state. He called on the hospital management to improve infrastructure and adopt inclusive systems that remove barriers to care.
Lt. Usman emphasized the importance of recruiting qualified sign language interpreters to enhance communication between healthcare professionals and patients who are deaf. He also advocated for a preferential system that would enable persons with disabilities to receive prompt medical attention without prolonged waiting times.
In his response, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad Mairuwa, commended the advocacy efforts and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to supporting persons with disabilities. He assured that measures would be taken to improve accessibility across clinics, facilitate quicker consultations, and implement the planned employment of sign language interpreters.
The move highlights ongoing efforts by the Katsina State Government to promote inclusive healthcare and improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities through strategic collaboration with key institutions.
