Bauchi, Nigeria — The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has called for urgent policy reforms to improve the welfare of workers with disabilities, including the introduction of a special disability allowance.
The call was made in a statement issued to mark International Workers’ Day 2026, and signed by the National President, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Usman. The association stressed that workers with disabilities face unique financial burdens, including the high cost of assistive devices, healthcare, mobility aids, and support services.
JONAPWD noted that while progress has been made in promoting inclusion, more targeted economic interventions are needed to address the realities faced by persons with disabilities. It stated that a disability allowance would help reduce inequality and enhance productivity by enabling affected workers to perform their duties effectively.
The association also advocated for a review of the retirement age for persons with disabilities, proposing an increase from 60 to 70 years. It explained that many individuals with disabilities enter the workforce later due to systemic barriers to education and employment, and should be given adequate time to build sustainable careers.
JONAPWD further urged employers to create inclusive work environments through accessible infrastructure and equal opportunities for career advancement. It reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy and called on government and private sector stakeholders to take decisive steps toward a more inclusive labour system.
