Wesley University, Ondo State, celebrated a remarkable milestone during its 13th convocation ceremony over the weekend as five students with hearing disabilities graduated with Second Class Upper honours. These exceptional students were part of the 230 students in the 2023/2024 academic session.
Speaking at the event held on the university’s campus in Ondo City, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sunday Obeka revealed that the deaf students excelled in various disciplines, including Computer Science and Law.
He highlighted the institution’s commitment to inclusivity through its Directorate of Deaf and Special Needs Education, which has empowered the deaf community and increased employment opportunities for deaf scholars.
Prof. Obeka also shared that the university had approved a sign language training programme for all staff and students to enhance communication with the deaf community. Additionally, he noted the institution’s collaboration with Cliff College in England to advance its theological education programme.
The Vice-Chancellor called on the Federal Government to support private universities offering medical education by funding staff salaries and infrastructure development to address the country’s health worker shortage.
