Educators have commenced a three-day Train-the-Trainers Workshop on Inclusive Mathematics Education for Learners with Visual Impairment, an initiative aimed at strengthening teachers’ capacity to deliver quality and accessible mathematics education to students with visual impairment.
The opening ceremony, held on Tuesday, was chaired by the General Manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, who reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to advancing inclusive education and ensuring equal learning opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Organised by the Resource Center for the Blind, the workshop is designed to equip educators with practical skills, innovative teaching strategies and accessible instructional resources needed to effectively teach mathematics to learners with visual impairment. The training is expected to enhance classroom practices and improve learning outcomes for students.
In her goodwill message, Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal commended the organisers for their unwavering commitment to promoting inclusive education through teacher capacity development. She noted that empowering educators with adaptive teaching methods, assistive technologies and appropriate learning resources is vital to building an education system that leaves no learner behind.
She emphasized that inclusive education remains a key pillar in creating an equitable society where every child, irrespective of disability, has access to quality education and equal opportunities to succeed.
The LASODA General Manager observed that while mathematics is often considered a difficult subject for learners with visual impairment, the use of innovative instructional approaches, assistive technologies and well-trained teachers can significantly improve accessibility and understanding. She urged participants to take full advantage of the workshop and apply the knowledge acquired to enrich teaching and learning in their schools.
Declaring the workshop officially open, Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal reiterated LASODA’s commitment to collaborating with organisations and stakeholders whose initiatives support the promotion of the rights, inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Lagos State.
The workshop will continue over the next two days with expert-led sessions, interactive discussions and practical demonstrations aimed at enhancing the quality of mathematics education for learners with visual impairment.
